The Governor was speaking at the Academic Meet on "From Access to Excellence: The Future Pathways of Distance Education" and the Book Release Ceremony of "Education: An Overview of Formal Open and Distance Learning"organized by Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), Mysuru.
Congratulating KSOU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sharanappa V. Halse and his team for organizing the event, the Governor said that the theme of the deliberations was closely linked to the future of higher education in India and reflected a strong vision of democratizing education and universalizing knowledge.
He noted that the education sector is witnessing unprecedented transformation driven by technology, digital resources and innovative teaching methods. These developments have made education more accessible, inclusive and effective. Open and distance learning systems, he said, have opened the doors of knowledge to millions of learners who are unable to access conventional educational institutions due to social, economic or geographical constraints.
Highlighting the role of distance education in women's empowerment, the Governor said that many women are unable to pursue regular education because of family responsibilities. Distance education enables them to continue their studies from home and become self-reliant. He added that such systems also provide valuable opportunities for persons with disabilities and socially disadvantaged sections, thereby contributing to inclusive growth.
The Governor observed that as the world moves towards a knowledge-based economy, India has a unique opportunity to offer a holistic and humane model of education. The integration of India's rich knowledge traditions with modern technological capabilities can take distance education to new heights. By placing quality, innovation and equal opportunity at the centre of educational reforms, India can emerge as a global leader in the field of education, he said.
Expressing happiness that Karnataka State Open University continues to make significant contributions in this direction, Shri Gehlot said that the University is doing commendable work through quality study materials, digital platforms, research and innovation to ensure that education reaches every section of society.
He expressed confidence that the book would serve as a valuable guide for policymakers, educators and researchers seeking to understand the changing educational landscape.
Congratulating Prof. N.S. Rame Gowda on the publication, the Governor said he hoped the book would provide fresh direction for knowledge enhancement and innovation in the field of open and distance education.
The Governor further stated that with the growing use of artificial intelligence, digital technologies and online learning platforms, education would become more accessible, flexible and quality-oriented. By promoting skill development, innovation and multidisciplinary learning, formal, open and distance education would contribute significantly to employment generation, human resource development and the creation of an inclusive, self-reliant and developed society, he added.
