The developments gained momentum after the resignation of outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was accepted by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot. Senior Congress leaders from Delhi, including K. C. Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala, arrived in Bengaluru to oversee the CLP proceedings and ensure a smooth leadership transition.
Ahead of the meeting, Congress MLAs gathered at Vidhana Soudha amid tight security and heightened political excitement. Several ministers and legislators publicly expressed confidence that Shivakumar's name would be approved unanimously. Senior Congress leader R. V. Deshpande stated that the CLP would pass a unanimous resolution electing Shivakumar as its leader.
Inside the meeting, party leaders emphasized unity and continuity. Sources indicated that Siddaramaiah himself was expected to propose Shivakumar's name, symbolizing a coordinated transfer of leadership between the two powerful Congress leaders who jointly led the party's 2023 electoral victory.
As the meeting progressed, legislators endorsed the proposal without significant opposition. The Congress high command's decision, following multiple rounds of consultations in New Delhi involving Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and other senior leaders, helped create consensus within the state unit.
The selection of Shivakumar marks a major milestone in his long political journey. Known as the Congress party's chief strategist in Karnataka and a key architect of several electoral victories, he now moves from Deputy Chief Minister to the state's top executive position. Political observers view the transition as a reward for his organizational strength and his role in rebuilding the Congress in Karnataka.
Following the CLP decision, preparations began for the formal claim to form the government and for the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for June 3 in Bengaluru. Discussions are also underway regarding cabinet formation, deputy chief minister posts, and balancing regional and caste representation within the new government.
For the Congress, the CLP meeting was more than a leadership election—it was a carefully managed transition aimed at preserving party unity and preparing for the next phase of governance in Karnataka under the leadership of D. K. Shivakumar.
