BANGALORE ALL SET TO HOST NATIONAL YOUTH GAMES-2008

Bangalore, India - Bangalore is all geared to host the biggest multi-sport youth games for the first time in the history of Indian sports, organized by the Department of Youth Services and Sports. The first-ever National Youth Games is set to be held in Bangalore form 22nd July to 29th July 2008 with a bid to strengthen the bond between the people of India and encourage the sports fraternity.

On the Occassion Mr. Amar Kumar Pandey, IPS, Commissioner, Department of Youth Services and Sports, "On behalf of the Government of Karnataka I would like to extend my thanks to the Indian Olympic Association for allowing Bangalore to host the first ever Youth Games. 24 disciplines, over 6000 athlets from all over the country, over 700 delegates and officials, over 1000 volunteers will be a part of this mega event. I, on behalf of the Government, can assure that this mega event will be no less than a world-class event and an experience of a lifetime for each and every one."

"We have to ensure that the success of these games will help to influence the outreach of the Youth Games and to strengthen its bond. We have to encourage and assist education via sports development. These games should inspire and unite the youth of our nation. With the success of these Games we should pledge our support for the National Youth Games to be held every two years," adds Pandey.

This mega event is set to give a platform to the winners of National Youth Games to participate in the forthcoming Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Pune in September-October 2008. in 2010, Singapore will host the first Youth Olympic Games [YOG] conceived in conjunction with other initiatives to address the decline in the relevance of sports amongst the younger generation. The event itself is a special occasion for the youth, which places as much if not more emphasis on the manner in which things are achieved rather than sporting excellence itself. This is because the Youth Games seeks to educate young people through the values that sport teaches. More than 6000 athletes are expected to take part in 24 disciplines in the Games. The tradition of the games has been set in motion in a magnificent way to reinforce the values of humanity and unity.

Committees have been formed to create facilities to organize each event and secretaries of different departments are heading panels. New Synthetic tracks would be provided for athletics and hockey stadia. The disciplines for the under-19 event are archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing[boys], cycling, equestrian, football, fencing, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, kabaddi, tennis, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling[boys].
