Bangalore,
India - Dr. Sri Ganesh, CMD, Nethradhama Hospital Pvt Ltd, Bangalore, Dr. Mahipal
Sachdev, CMD, Centre for Sight, New Delhi and Dr. Grewal, CMD, Grewal Eye Institure,
Chandigrah inaugurated the function. Dr.
Sri Ganesh while giving his address said earlier versions of Lasik do not correct
lower order aberrations which cause night vision disturbances (glare and halos).
Now there is a new customized system which corrects all these imperfections (lower
order aberrations). This system also used a laser on the base of the eye to create
the flap. The standard LASIK uses a blade to create the flap, which is most common.
The latest new gold standard by AMO system used a laser to create the flap and
then used the AMO VISX system to correct the underlying abnormalities in the cornea
which improves both day and night vision. With the Wavefront system, we are able
to achieve 98 percent 20/20 vision, with 70 percent achieving even better than
20/20 vision. The standard LASIK technology can only achieve 95% 20/20 vision.
With the AMO IntraLase, there is no cutting of the cornea. The laser will apply
tiny little spots on the cornea bed and the tiny spot will coalesce and join together,
and the flap will be lifted up. The laser is applied to the base of the flap and
then the flap is put back. This allows rapid healing within-minutes. By using
a blade, you cannot be precise on how deep the flap is cut. The blade could be
rusty and might not be sharp enough. These imperfections of the blade cannot be
seen until the cornea flap is created. With the AMO IntraLase, nothing can go
wrong and a designed flap is created. Vice
President of Advanced Medical Optics, Asia Pacific, USA Mr. Jim Francis said in
his speech that this procedure is the first approved system used by the Top Gun
US Naval Pilots- they use the AMO VISX and AMO IntraLase to treat these pilots
which cost a lot to train. In the past when these pilots use the blade to cut
the flap, the flap could be dislodged when the pilots are put through their rigorous
training. Using the new technology, the flaps will be very well secured in the
eye and there is no chance for the flap to slide away in the future. The flap
is very well designed. US Naval forces have approved the use of this new technology
on their pilots. This procedure has also been recently approved for NASA Astronauts. Nethradhama
Super Speciality Eye Hospital, is the ONLY EYE HOSPITAL, in South India, having
this unique and hitech iLASIK facility apart from Centre for Sight, New Delhi
and Grewal Eye Institute, Chandigrah. FOR
